New mentoring scheme for parents of disabled children

Home
PARENTS AT WORK’s Waving not drowning project is looking for parents of children with disabilities who would like support in moving into work or study. Its new mentoring scheme, to be piloted in the Merton, Sutton and Croydon areas, will match up parents with mentors who will help them identify their skills and negotiate any barriers. The idea is that mentors will encourage parents to find their own answers to any stumbling blocks that may be standing in their way, be it compiling a CV, finding childcare or identifying appropriate training.

If this sounds like you, email the project now or call Janet Mearns on 020 7628 3565 for more information.

We are also looking for mentors. We will be recruiting people from a mixture of academic/training, advice agency, public and voluntary sector and business backgrounds. They will receive training from PARENTS AT WORK, as well as a pack of relevant information and opportunities to network with each other, so they can share their experience and knowledge. Further schemes will be organised in other parts of Surrey, Ealing, Hartlepool, Huddersfield, Sunderland and Wigan over the next 18 months.

The Waving not drowning project provides advice, a network and a newsletter for parents of disabled children. Our Special Needs Helpline is on 020 7588 0802. PARENTS AT WORK also has a Low Income Families Helpline providing free legal advice on 020 7628 2128 and free factsheets for all working parents on 020 7628 3578 or via our website at www.parentsatwork.org.uk
