New seatbelt safety adaptor now available for expectant mothers

A breakthrough in conventional seat belt design has resulted in an option that makes car travel significantly safer for pregnant mothers and their unborn children.

Discussion rages permanently as to the pros and cons of compulsory sear-belt wearing. When it comes to pregnant women, there is even more contention. Owing to the positioning of a conventional strap - which directly crosses the abdomen - women have been extremely concerned about the possibility of injury to the fetus as well as themselves. Research bears out their fears. Since an adult can be propelled forward with a force of three to five tons in an accident, there is real risk of damage to the fetus’s spinal cord, which would bear the brunt of the impact, and/or damage to the mother’s internal organs. The most recent investigations - conducted by Dr Pring at York Hospital - has proved beyond a doubt that while conventional strap design may help to save the mother’s life, the baby’s life remains in danger. Even harsh breaking is enough to cause severe injuries to the baby or bring on a miscarriage.

Now a Norweigan company called HTS is offering a solution that will protect the life and health of unborn babies and mothers alike. Called BeSafe Pregnant, it takes the form of a special cushion which diverts the safety belt down underneath the ‘bump’, completely protecting the uterus and the unborn child. BeSafe is comfortable to wear and designed to fit any model of car. It has been launched following years of exhaustive tests and far and away exceeds the statutory EEC regulatory requirements.

BeSafe is available from Halfords stores, cost GBP 24.99 in the child safety section.
