No evidence to show girls are starting periods any earlier

Home
Research carried out by St George’s Medical School in London indicates that the age of the onset of puberty in young girls is no younger than it was in the 50s and 60s. There has been much speculation of late about girls starting periods younger and younger - even as early as eight years of age. However, this latest study - which took account of the experiences of some 1,000 schoolgirls aged between 12 and 16 and which appeared recently in the British Medical Journal - indicated that the average age is 12 years and 11 months.
