Parents putting child road safety at risk

Home
New research reveals that many parents could be putting their children at risk by demonstrating poor road safety.

The Department for Transport’s Think campaign survey shows that almost three in four (74%) parents do not always use zebra crossings to cross the road if they’re in a hurry and almost two-thirds (63%) said they did not always wait an extra few seconds for the green light before crossing the road.

Over one in five (22%) admitted to crossing the road while talking or texting on a mobile phone.

Road Safety Minister David Jamieson said:

“This is an important piece of research. Actions speak louder than words with road safety and while most of us think we know the ground rules, it’s easy to forget that children will cut corners if they see us doing so.
“As children prepare to head back to school, many of them will be using a different route from the one they are used to and may even be venturing out alone for the first time. Some may also have allowed their road safety skills to become rusty over the summer holidays. All adults should look out for children at this time,
and all the time, and be mindful that children will follow by example.”

Other findings included:

• 54% of parents admit to crossing at bus stops while the bus is still there, or between parked cars;
• 28% don’t know how to use a traffic island in the middle of a pedestrian crossing correctly;
• 23% don’t know that you should wear reflective clothes after dark to stay safe on the roads;
• 12% of parents even admit to climbing over pedestrian safety barriers to get to the other side of the road if they’re in a hurry.

The Government is committed to reducing the number of children killed or seriously injured in road accidents by 50% by 2010 compared with the average for 1994-1998.

The research into parents’ knowledge of the Green Cross Code and road behaviour was carried out by BMRB in the period 2-4 August 2002. The research was carried out amongst 576 parents of children under 16.
