TB found in London nursery school

Home
Twenty five nursery school children were recently tested for TB after one of their teachers was diagnosed with the condition after she collapsed at school. Because the incubation period for the disease is six weeks, parents had an agonisingly long wait before they knew if their youngsters were affected or not.

While usually treatable with prolonged courses of antibiotics, TB is extremely contagious and incidences have risen by some 12% in the UK this year. An increase in drug resistant strains is being blamed, along with lack of monitoring resources and the influx of asylum seekers into this country who frequently come from countries where the condition rages unchecked. Only 5% of carriers ever exhibit symptoms of TB which include a high temperature, a persistent cough, weight loss and fatigue.

For some years now, UK schoolchildren have been offered the BCG vaccination which offers a 50% protection rate against the disease
