US research proves taller men have more children

New Scientist magazine has recently carried news of research carried out in the States which proves that taller men have more children than their shorter counterparts. It all started in 1950 when evolutionary psychologists tracked the lives of 333 men graduating from a US military academy. The men ranged in height from 5ft 2ins to 6ft 5ins. More shorter men remained single - and those that got married did not produce as many children as taller peers. In fact, the psychologists discovered that taller men were six times as likely to have a fourth child than shorter men.

Further analysis has recently been done on these findings, headed up by Dr Allan Mazur from Syracuse University in New York.

Dr Mazur who made the following comment on his research, ‘There is ample evidence that on all levels of courtship, women do make the choices. Tallness is pretty much universally attractive - possibly because it’s a highly heritable trait and a reliable indicator of male offspring’s potential for high status. Everyday experience suggests that, on average, taller men are heavier and physically stronger than shorter men.’

Dr John Lazarus of Newcastle University’s Evolution and Behaviour Research Group attributes the trend to the fact that apparently women find taller men more attractive. It seems they are more likely to select them as a mate, since today height is subconsciously associated with higher earning ability, greater strength and higher fertility - and a throwback to a more primitive age, perhaps, when physical size and strength were essential for survival.

Unfortunately for women, because they are so attractive taller men also appear to be more likely to marry more than once and go on to have more children with subsequent partners
